The Show Must Go On: Graphite Drawings on Duralar

September 22nd, 2009 § 0

Just several hours ago I woke up from a little nap to urinate.  Upon doing so the whole bathroom roof collapsed upon me while I was almost fully naked.  Luckily I got to finish urinating before this beautiful incident happened (and I came out in one piece).  You can check out the photos of the damage here.  Pretty crazy huh?  Anyways…this is an art blog…not a personal diary of my deepest darkest confessions of a death hungry bathroom.  I just wanted to show you all that I am human…well…almost.

And so the show must go on.  Recently I have been working on duralar/mylar with a Faber Castell 1.4mm pencil.  I must say it is great stuff to work on, for me at least.  I also wet my finger with spit and smear things around where I find necessary.  I’ve been trying to fine tune my work recently and not focusing on too much of the shadow shapes but how the light reveals the form and I must say there is a big difference.  Some of these drawings are finished, some of them I am still adding to their compositions, and some still a work in progress.

Self-portrait with palette knives

September 16th, 2009 § 0

It’s been awhile since I’ve updated this blog…again.  Here’s something I did recently with palette knives.  It’s my first painting with knives (also a very rare self-portrait) and I must say that I enjoyed painting this tremendously.  I think I was looking at some of Ann Gale’s work and wanted to experiment with the body and application of paint.  So let’s get to it already…here it is…

Yellow Yellow

July 14th, 2009 § 0

I finished this painting last week on Monday I think.  I first started with the underpainting, pushing raw umber and gamsol around, placing edges where I saw fit and keeping it simple yet informative.  I didn’t have in mind the yellow flowers in the initial underpaint but I did know I wanted to add something to the mix…especially since I grabbed the image somewhere off of google. I changed several things around so I could deviate from the original image that I referenced.  I also paid very close attention to the composition and placement of light, shadow, warm vs. cool (although I may I muted the colors a little too much since I was using a decent amount) and the form.

All in all it was a good excersize for me and I learned alot from this lil’ guy.  I think I’ll name her “Yellow Yellow”.

They are just ideas and sketches in my moleskine books. Some of them are more complete…and some just cuz i think it’s da bomb shiet…

Photoshop?!? No way…

An attempt at some mixed media in photoshop…

It’s not the best thing but I had fun none the less. I first started with a drawing on a wood panel and then put an overlay of duralar on top of it. I then took a picture of it and threw in some shadows and light in photoshop and had an idea to have flames coming out of the eye socket of the skull. I think this piece is more of a utilization of shapes and compositional study than anything. I basically made one shape to create the flames. Some of the lighting and shadows are created from the shape of the light that I first layed in photoshop. Those shapes were just warped and manipulated to encompass the idea that needed to be portrayed in that area of the image. A couple layers were slapped in the background and there you have it.

I know it isn’t amazing photoshop skill…but hell…I tried ;p
